The repeatable opportunity for selection differs between pre‐ and postcopulatory fitness components

چکیده

Abstract In species with multiple mating, intense sexual selection may occur both before and after copulation. However, comparing the strength of pre- postcopulatory is challenging, because (i) processes are generally difficult to observe (ii) often-used opportunity for (I) metric contains deterministic stochastic components. Here, we quantified male fitness components simultaneously hermaphroditic flatworm, Macrostomum lignano. We did this by tracking fluorescent sperm—using transgenics—through transparent body sperm recipients, enabling in vivo. Moreover, sequentially exposed focal worms three independent mating groups, each assessed their success, sperm-transfer efficiency, fertilizing partner fecundity. Based on these measures, could, component, combine variance repeatability (R) individual success assess amount repeatable success—a measure call (IR). found higher efficiency compared which clearly suggests that stronger than precopulatory selection. High opportunity for postcopulatory sexual selection under field conditions.

In polygamous systems, male fitness is determined not only by mating success but also by fertilization success. Despite the growing interest over the past several decades in postcopulatory sexual selection, its relative importance compared to precopulatory sexual selection remains a subject of debate. Here, we use extensive behavioral observations of a seminatural population of Hawaiian swordta...

Dynamic resource allocation between pre- and postcopulatory episodes of sexual selection determines competitive fertilization success.

In polyandrous mating systems, male reproductive success depends on both mate-acquisition traits (precopulatory) and sperm competitive abilities (postcopulatory). Empirical data on the interaction between these traits are inconsistent; revealing positive, negative or no relationships. It is generally expected that the investment in pre- and postcopulatory traits is mediated by environmental con...

Correlated evolution between targets of pre‐ and postcopulatory sexual selection across squamate reptiles

Sexual selection reflects the joint contributions of precopulatory selection, which arises from variance in mating success, and postcopulatory selection, which arises from variance in fertilization success. The relative importance of each episode of selection is variable among species, and comparative evidence suggests that traits targeted by precopulatory selection often covary in expression w...

Postcopulatory sexual selection.

The female reproductive tract is where competition between the sperm of different males takes place, aided and abetted by the female herself. Intense postcopulatory sexual selection fosters inter-sexual conflict and drives rapid evolutionary change to generate a startling diversity of morphological, behavioural and physiological adaptations. We identify three main issues that should be resolved...

Multivariate selection drives concordant patterns of pre- and postcopulatory sexual selection in a livebearing fish

In many species, females mate with multiple partners, meaning that sexual selection on male traits operates across a spectrum that encompasses the competition for mates (that is, before mating) and fertilizations (after mating). Despite being inextricably linked, pre- and postcopulatory sexual selection are typically studied independently, and we know almost nothing about how sexual selection o...
